Sunday Morning on CBS is one of my favorite programs. They always have a series
of interesting stories from around the US, people to see and places to go!
I hope to pass on a little of the same........
NEW HAMPSHIRE SUNDAY MORNING
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Exploring this wonderful State of New Hampshire is something my husband and I never tire of! There are so many diverse attractions and ever-changing landscapes...the possibilities are endless!
Picking my five favorites places to see in Concord New Hampshire is a challenge.
This community is historic, charming and culturally diverse. Concord has neighborhood schools, museums, medical facilities and a World Famous Law school. There are lakes, rivers and hiking trails in our back yard and we are within a two hours drive of the ocean, the mountains and the City of Boston....Concord has it all!
The places I have chosen represent the diverse nature of my home town...some of the places that make it special!
View Larger Map
- Eagle Square
- Forest Society
- Sewalls Falls Recreation Area
- Mill Brook Gallery
- Dimond Hill Farm
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1- EAGLE SQUARE -We will start our tour on Main Street in Concord at Eagle Square. Eagle Square is right across the street from the State House...just look for the Clock Tower
that stands outside the entrance.
In addition to being the entrance to
The NH Historical Society, the square has an area of stadium type seating and hosts many Summer concerts. There are two opportunity's for outdoor dining and a wonderful
Fountain (which unfortunately not spouting when I was there!)
2- FOREST SOCIETY-After leaving Eagle Square, follow Main Street north to the intersection with Rt.393. Continue on 393 to Exit 2 (East Side Drive). Follow East Side Drive for about 3/4 mile to Portsmouth Street on left. After a short distance you will see The Forest Society on your left.
The Society building is home to many traveling art exhibits and features classes and lectures mostly focusing on environmental subjects.
But....one of the most delightful aspects of the Society grounds can be reached from the Lower Parking Lot. An area of trail and paths that follow the Merrimack River.
A popular area for walking your dog,
enjoying a picnic or even flying a kite!
The view is Fantastic!!
- 3- SEWALLS FALLS RECREATION AREA
Ater leaving The Forest Society continue down Portsmouth Street until it ends at the intersection of 132 (Mountain Road)Follow Mountain Road past the Country Club and some of the most beautiful views in the City! After about 3 miles you will come to the intersection with Sewalls Falls Road on your left....go over the Iron Bridge (single lane please)
and the recreation area is on your left! The launching area is also a starting point for one of the many trails in the Concord Trail System. There are places to
sit and fish or enjoy the view and secret sandy strips for swimming and wading.
- 4 - MILL BROOK GALLERY
If you wish to head in another direction after leaving Eagle Square...perhaps for more artistic persuits....head South on Main Street to a right on Pleasant. Follow Pleasant St. or Hopkington Road (as it is sometimes called) past the Concord Hospital and St Pauls School. After a few more miles you will spot
The Mill Brook Gallery. A fantastic treat for the eyes and one of my favorite places. A new exhibit started last week and I've yet to visit...here are some photos from last years trip! There is much to see...inside and out!

- 5- DIMOND HILL FARM
About 1/2 mile from Mill Brook is Dimond Hill Farm.
Dimond Hill has been in the same
family for generations.
What I find so amazing about Dimond Hill is the fact that it is only 5 minutes from the center of Concord! As you come upon the farm...heading towards Concord the view would take your breath away! It is a working Farm with vegetables and a few animals. They also are open to the public and sell fruits, baked goods,cheeses and other specialties.

The Farm will continue in perpituity because the people of the area raised money for its preservation. A wonderful oasis within city limits.

Joan, I hope I have time to explore New Hampshire's beautiful scenery some day. Thanks for the nice post.
Wow, Joan, what a fantastic post. I would love to see ALL of it and especially the Mill Brook Gallery and the historic homes. I felt like I just visited there for a few minutes, thank you!
Hi Brian...you especially would enjoy all the history ....every village has more than a few buildings to die for! Let me know if you ever make the trip and I'll give you a list of the best of the best!!
Hi Carole...I thought of you when I did this cause I haven't done one in a while. Now that the weather is nicer I have a few more in mind!
Joan, traveling down the roads in your area and through this post looks so peaceful with so many stops along the way to do things. I would want to definitely stop and visit the working farm and pick up some fresh fruits. You took some great photos.
Thanks for the compliment Gary! Except for the intersections downtown and the highway...this is definately a peaceful area to drive around...with lots to see!
Joan
You are the coolest, and I loved the pictures
Sincerely
Tom Braatz
Hi Joni,
What a great tour of your beautiful area. I love that the farm has been preserved and will be there for future generations to enjoy.
Hi Joan,
WoW! Beautiful city you live in...especially to have so many lovely natural areas so close by or right within the city. I would love to explore there some day and especially like the idea of 'secret sandy strips' for swimming and wading.
Gorgeous pictures.....your favourites fall right into the things I'm most drawn to ~nature, art and history.

Sunday Morning on CBS
Joan, don't you miss Charles K? He died right around July 4th, 1997. Doesn't seem possible that 11 years have passed since then.
Mike in Tucson
New Hamphire.........breathtaking........thank you for sharing the beauty of you home!
These are all things I'd love to do while visiting in your area.. wonderful make up of woohoo's to do!
Hi Joan! I love CBS Sunday Morning. It is without question the "smartest" show on television and very entertaining. It always makes me think about life in a different way.
As for Concord, well I am planning to be there soon (as you know), so I will definitely make Abby and Jason show me these places.
Thanks Tom...and thanks for the visit!-I've missed you!
Hi Cynthia...I agree...it is such a beautifulimpression coming into the city(better than another strip mall or housing development!
Hi Jo...I knew you'dappreciate the area-you seem to have similar places near you!
Mike...he was wonderful-and this is still one of my favoriteprograms..they've kept it true to the spirit!
Liz...you're welcome, thanks for stopping by
Hi Sally...does it cost as much to come here as it doesto go there? Come visit!
Hi Steve...My sentiments exactlly..Abby actually mentioned the Forest Society when we were talking!
Great post. I hope to visit the places some day. I would like to visit all 50 States .
Gita...I would love to do that myself..don't think it will happen! The Grand Canyon is first on my list!
Joan,
What a beautiful area!! The country side is gorgeous--I can see why you and your husband never get tired of exploring the area. I have always wanted to visit that part of the U.S. What a great country that we live in--each state has it's own uniqueness. Thanks for sharing with us your corner of the world. Okay, you shared your top 5, but what is your number one? I really like your use of the map in your post--a great idea.
Thank you for your nice comments Deborah...My favorite is actually the physical location of Concord. Within an hours drive we can get to the mountains and the ocean and some of the most beautiful scenery. We are two hours from Boston an hour from the Maine coast or the valleys of Vermont. I do have to admit...that as i get older...I hate Winter and the cold but the Spring, Summer and Fall come close to making up for it!
This area is steeped in history and colonial archtecture...much of it preserved!
Aren't you sorry you asked?
Joan - I have never been lucky enough to visit New Hampshire; your postand wonderful pictures make me want to put it hight on my list of places to visit.
Come on up Pam...it's really a do-able drive if you can avoid that expressway trafic...especially throug DC.
We used to do the drive to see family in NC in one day....now we stay over in NJ and then continue.Thank you for your kind words!
Joan - Lovely post. I love New England and really want to visit New Hampshire.
Great information...just what I was looking for.
thanks and good luck!
Mike Warren
It looks lovely and quaint - much like the part of the world where my husband comes from.... New Brunswick Canada.
Thank you Tom...no time like the present!!
OK Mike...that was intriguing! And you were looking for it why? I see you are a Mainer...I have a few posts on here with a lot of Maine pictures...my Dad lives outside Thomaston and my Brother lives in Tennants Harbor.
Georgina...I've not been to New Brunswick but if quaint is the operative word Concord comes close!
Joan, New Hampshire looks like a beautiful state..Thank you for sharing, I really enjoyed the informative post and learning more about your state.
Hi Gary...I'm so glad you enjoyed it...you really should try to come visit someday!
