No~It's NOT The Sewage Treatment Plant...It's Spring

Concord New Hampshire A Main Street Community

poop

There was a fun story on the front page of todays Concord Monitor. A story pointing out one of the most charming aspects of Concord, NH, the fact that Concord has not totally rid itself of its agricultural roots!

It's the smell of Mother Nature's fertilizer....it's the smell of "Poop".

From one side of Concord to the other even to the streets downtown, the smell of manure permeates the air.

To quote City Planner Doug Woodward "It reminds us that there's still agriculture in Concord...New Hampshire has not been completely paved over"

There are still two major Dairy Farms in the Concord area, The Bartlett Farm and the Morrill Farm Dairy. They own a good portion of the land surrounding the city, and at this time every year they fertilize the fields. And every year the city hears complaints from people who have forgotten where their food comes from!

So, if you happen to be new to the Concord area...or are just passing through!

Not to worry...It's NOT the Sewage Treatment Plant farmers It's Spring!!

Hi Joni,
Reminds me of when I visit my Grannie.  The area she lives in has large chicken and hog farms.  The aroma can be strong at times.

Eric...there is something connected about the whole Spring thing....food doesn't come from the Super Market for sure!

It seems even after the farm is gone and the homes are built the farm fresh country air still finds it's way out at night.

Joan - I really miss that smell in a very odd way.  It was like an affirmation that spring had truly arrived and that the cold and snow were just a memory - until next winter.  Thanks for stirring one of those memories that brings a smile.

Carol...one of my listings is across the street from beautiful pastoral fields(corn fields) and I've had a few younger lookers turn up their noses(no pun intended) because it's a farm...go figure!

Glad you have pleasant memories!

Ah the smell of spring.  Can't believe that there could be future generations who don't know the smell of fresh manure and the wonders of what it can do to your garden.

Good reminder, Joan!

I was visiting with a client who I sold a house to last year a few days ago and we spent part of the time watching the farmers fertilize the field across the way....they don't mind the smell at all as they realize it is just temporary and beats the smog and sirens of the city (they moved here from downtown Toronto) anyday!!
