Ladybug, ladybug
Fly away home....
![]()
It's that time of year again in New Hampshire! Every Fall, seemingly out of nowhere, our office is invaded by ladybugs....LOTS of ladybugs.
They are coating the outside of the building. Crawling
all over the windows and clustered on the ceiling lights! You
really have to see it to believe it!
For some strange reason ladybugs have found a soft-spot in the psyche of most so why this phenomenon is a bit creepy...I find it more curious!
Well today I found out why!!
There was an article in Thursday's Concord Monitor about the "Halloween Ladybug"(or the Harmonia Axyridis.)![]()
It would seem this creature
arrived in New Hampshire somewhere around 1994. They are considered very beneficial in that they consume lots of aphids. They usually live in trees. But, come Fall they seek warmth
and find their way in thru any crack or crevice they come
across. In fact it appears that when one finds a way in he "calls to" the others!
If you want to get rid of them you could take them , one by one, and toss them to the elements or ...the unthinkable.... or take a large jar,
fill with crumpled paper a damp sponge and a few green
leaves. Collect the bugs, cover the jar tightly and store in a cold place (30-40 degrees)
Then in the Spring....Ladybug, ladybug fly away home!

Wow Joan - I have never even dreamed of soooo many lady Bugs! Would they really store like that?? I guess they must hibernate over winter in the cracks and crannies wherever they can, huh?
This would certainly be an ideal scenario for storing them for the next year's gardens.
Love the bugs!
Hi Joan - around here we have had issues with the Asian Ladybug (according to the papers that's the name of them). They are orange instead of red and they become quite the problem in the spring. Worst of all they bite the tar out of you. Not like the ordinary red and black ladybug that we all grew up with.
Go ahead and catch a few, save them till spring and let them go in your garden. Your plants will love you for it!
Joan, How perfect that you blogged about this. Thanks so much for this ladybug info..
I love ladybugs and sometimes I let some of them stay in my living room on my hibiscus tree (which has a real white fly and aphid problem that I can barely keep up with) all winter. They cover the outside of my building this time of year too and there were also thousands at the Cape Cod house some of my clients are buying a few days ago.
I have very cute little wind-up ladybug that walks and shakes it's little arms around....my son gave it to me when he was 8 yrs old since he knew how much I love ladybugs. I treasure it.
Your images are adorable....
