Harmonia Axyridis

 Ladybug, ladybug

 Fly away home....ladybugs ladybug

It's that time of year again in New Hampshire! Every Fall, seemingly out of nowhere,  our office is invaded by ladybugs....LOTS of ladybugs.

They are coating the outside of the building. Crawlingbug all over the windows and clustered on the ceiling lights! Youbug really have to see it to believe it!

For some strange reason ladybugs have found a soft-spot in the psyche of most so why this phenomenon is a bit creepy...I find it more curious!ladybug  flowerWell today I found out why!!

There was an article in Thursday's Concord Monitor about the "Halloween Ladybug"(or the Harmonia Axyridis.)ladybug

It would seem this creaturebugarrived in New Hampshire somewhere around 1994. They are considered very beneficial in that they consume lots of aphids. They usually live in trees. But, come Fall they seek warmthbugand find their way in thru any crack or crevice they comebug across. In fact it appears that when one finds a way in he "calls to" the others!

If you want to get rid of them you could take them , one by one, and toss them to the elements or ...the unthinkable.... or take a large jar,bug fill with crumpled paper a damp sponge and a few greenbug leaves. Collect the bugs, cover the jar tightly and store in a cold place (30-40 degrees)

Then in the Spring....Ladybug, ladybug fly away home!name

Hi Joan, I didn't know that. I should have you collect a whole jar of these and I will care for them and come spring they will have a field day here. Certainly no shortage of ladybug food, right here in my yard and I hate chemicals, even though as a last resort, that is what I use. Don't tell the environmentalists, they think I am one , OK,I do try. Maybe not as hard as I should , I guess. A fun and enjoyable read. I love the A-C-T-I-O-N of the these cuties.

Wow Joan - I have never even dreamed of soooo many lady Bugs! Would they really store like that?? I guess they must hibernate over winter in the cracks and crannies wherever they can, huh?

This would certainly be an ideal scenario for storing them for the next year's gardens.

Love the bugs!

Hi Joan, I Miss the few ladybugs I've seen up here this season, they are all gone :(  I had no idea they could hibernate but would be worried to keep them in a jar.  They are probably the ONLY bugs that don't scare me, I think I'd love to have them around!  Great post!  And make a few wishes.....

Hi Joan - around here we have had issues with the Asian Ladybug (according to the papers that's the name of them).  They are orange instead of red and they become quite the problem in the spring.  Worst of all they bite the tar out of you.  Not like the ordinary red and black ladybug that we all grew up with.

Go ahead and catch a few, save them till spring and let them go in your garden.  Your plants will love you for it!

Joan, How perfect that you blogged about this. Thanks so much for this ladybug info..

I love ladybugs and sometimes I let some of them stay in my living room on my hibiscus tree (which has a real white fly and aphid problem that I can barely keep up with) all winter.  They cover the outside of my building this time of year too and there were also thousands at the Cape Cod house some of my clients are buying a few days ago.

I have very cute little wind-up ladybug that walks and shakes it's little arms around....my son gave it to me when he was 8 yrs old since he knew how much I love ladybugs. I treasure it.

Your images are adorable....

Hey!  We're seeing FLIES right now- I'd much rather have the pretty little ladybugs.  I wonder why they are so appealing- it's the dots, I think!

We get Miller Moths 2X a year. Not nearly as pleasant I'm sure. Millers leave marks on walls and on furniture. BTW - how'd you do that?

Joan, your graphic is great. I love the little red ladybugs we had growing up in Massachusetts. In my area of Virginia they are a carmel brown.

Joan, We had a small invasion when we lived  in NY. Everyone on our block and in the area seemed to have a visitation. The remedy is so interesting...
How do you do those graphics... How about a post on it?
