Seven To Save in Concord New Hampshire

school

Many of Concord New Hampshire's Neighborhood Elementary Schools date to pre-1936.

There is a plan in the works to consolidate Concords Eight Elementary Schools . The "Plan"  envisions closing four, rebuilding two and one new one!

A group of citizens , calling themselves ABC (A Better Choice), is attempting to save seven of the schools by having them put on the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance List (NHPA). This in an attempt to preserve Concord's heritage.

Those seeking to consolidate have an Economic Perspective. They contend Lunch Box that dropping enrollment has made them too small to be effective!

Whatever the decision....to remodel or rebuild most hope that the schools can be preserved even if in Another Capacity.

The schools in Concord have been centers of neighborhood Social Activity for many years. They each have their own Community History.

There is a School Board Election coming up next month....and there are three vacant seats. Perhaps members of the ABC Group could get themselves elected?

It's not over till it's over!

Concord, NH-A Main Street Community and a friendly place to live!

I hope that your group stays the fight to save your tax owned property-school buildings.  We spent two years and $30,000.00 in attorney fees to save a high school building in my home town.  There is not enough spact here to tell the whole story except to say that the people that were aginst us to start are now saying look what we have done.  A new community museum in a beatuiful building.  The museum depicts the history of schools in Texas.  A long battle but worth it.

You did a wonderful job laying this out. It is so well antimated and makes it really fun to read! Great Job.

Joan - we are having some terrible issues here with our public schools.  The current BOE is spending money like drunken sailors on shore leave and then the next day they are crying about needing more money and how we should vote for a levy "for the children."  It's a mess - everywhere.

Joan - you provide great links and I agree you have laid this out well. Our school in Coopersville, Michigan has studied -- build new or remodel. Their studies showed more cost effectiveness in upgrading and remodeling the buildings. This was still quite expensive but we are not sitting with old, outdated buildings for sale, either. Good luck with it.

Joan, there's something really important about keeping the schools that are of historic value preserved (but better yet, utilized)- I hope they decide to update.

Don...that's a great story. I think Concord has learned her lesson.

In the 60's they tore down a wonderful railroad station to make room for a big brick box block!

They regret it now!

Mary so many towns have such wonderful expressions of art...called municipal buildings. I do actually think they are starting to recognize it!

Carol...where is the pressure to spend coming from? Is it going to the right areas?

I will say Concord parents are very vocal and keep the Board Members feet to the fire!

Hi Joan,
What I have observed it that most people are in favor of preservation but if it means an increase in tax (which it usually does) support goes out the window.  I think the problem is "priorities".

That's for sure Cynthia but people in this area seem very committed to preservation it may be a New England thing?
