The Federal Government just releases National Test Scores (National Assessment of Educational Progress) in Math and Reading!

On the 4th grade level NH was out scored by MA. In the 8th we were outscored by VT and MA.
Even though the numbers look good....There are a few problems!
- Eighth Grade reading in NH has remained stagnant since 2003.
- The NAEP assessments have also found that 4th grade girls outscore boys in Reading and the gap is bigger by 8th grade. This is a National finding. (In NH the overall scores ma be higher but the gap is consistant with the rest of the country)
- Another finding is in regards to low-income students. Low income students score significantly lower than their more well off classmates. The gap between the NH haves and have-nots was approximately 15
points. It was lower than the National Gap. The National Gap between those of lessor income was 24 points.
How do we interpret these findings? Why would New Hampshire, and the North-East in general, score higher than the National Average?
Why the consistent gap (across the Nation) between low and higher income students?....Could it be something as simple as access to Technology?
These are questions we all should concern ourselves with. The Educational System we implement and support as Citizens..... for-tells the viability of our Future!

As for The Gender Gap?....Correct me ifI'm wrong but it seems to me that the Gender Gap existed long before the days of "National Scores"
It all comes out in the wash!

Reasons are subjective and will vary even among neighborhoods. I suppose it is about self image and being enabled by friends, family neighbours and even the immediate peer group.
I used to suppose it might be just about genes or family background, And it would be true if we used greater than 10 % of our brains. In truth it is like 7 or 8 %. So it can't be that because some can excel to use 11 or 12 % of their brains, and they are at or near genius levels. I came from a moderately poor family and my IQ is the same as Bill Gates. Uhmmmm
It is my belief that it is the way that children are positioned. That being a broad statement. Positioned by the family. Is mediocrity OK in that family? Is mediocrity among the immediate peer group granting more licenses not to excel but to be mediocre?
My sister and I worked with an autistic child. She was a 9 your old foster child. We found her on Sunday school. My sister got custody and eventually adopted her. We continued our work, and she was valedictorian of her Senior class, graduated from the University, Magna Cum Laude. When the circustances chnage, then there is a chance for everyuthing to change, if the modivators are also changed. Love,support and hard work usually all pay off.
William...I couldn't agree more! That is why I respond so badly to the present Educational policy of Tests and Test scores with no emphasis on Learning!! Testing is not necessarily an accurate indicator.
We need to be teaching to our children's individuality and building on their sucesses. I would rather support the building of productive citizens with my tax dollars than fixes after the fact!
I volunteer for an organization that supports and supplies services to children with disabilitys(developmental,physical and emotional) and helps to educate the familys in advocacy and disability law. Evidence of their successes.....is priceless.
Hi Monika...I can't tell you how many teachers I have spoken to who are totally frustrated with the demands and restrictions of "No Child Left Behind"...especially in the Nashua area!
