New Hampshire Sunday Morning-#5

   sun

  Sunday Morning on CBS is one of my favorite programs. They always have a series

                  of  interesting stories from around the US, people to see and places to go!

                        I hope to pass on a little of the same........

                                                                   NEW HAMPSHIRE SUNDAY MORNING

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  Exploring this wonderful State of New Hampshire is something my husband and I never tire of! There are so many diverse attractions and ever-changing landscapes...the possibilities are endless!
  The beautiful weather of the past few days called us to do another Road Trip from the great book called BEST NEW HAMPSHIRE DRIVES-14 Tours in the Granite State, by Kay and Bill Scheller.
  We chose to do a re-worked version of Tour#3,  Mt. Monadnock and the surrounding Villages. There is so much to experience and see in this area.
  Starting from where we last left off-New Hampshire Sunday Morning-#4 in Peterborough, New Hampshire-we headed towards Jaffrey and its historical Jaffrey Center.This picturesque village was once the hub of activity but the Third NH Turnpike and the coming of the railroad( 1870) reduced its importance and it is now a tourist destination with historic interest.
  The "Meetinghouse" .meetinghouse..the frame of the Meetinghouse was raised on the day of the Battle of Bunker Hill (June 17, 1775) It is said that the workers could hear the sounds of the battle! The Meetinghouse was the center of Town activities there were even "parking spaces" reserved for the townshorse shed most influential citizens!
  schoolhouse
  The "Little Red Schoolhouse"...no historic center is complete without a little red schoolhouse. This one-known as Schoolhouse No.11- was moved to its present site in 1960 and has been restored ...pot belly stove to it's original state!
  Behind the Meeting House is a century's old cemetery among the graves of notice is one of a soldier who died at Bunker Hill graveand the noted author Willa Carther. It is rumored that she wrote her popular novel My Antonia in Jaffrey having spent many Summers there!grave
  We headed from the history of Jaffrey to the peaceful serenity of Rhododendron State Park in Fitzwilliam New Hampshire.
                                                 Park Sign
flowers            bushes   flowers
  This , the States only Botanical Park has a 16 acre grove of Rhododendron Maximum. The total Park acreage totals 2,723 acres of trails and wildflowers. It's most popular time is mid-July when the famous flowers are in bloom. I found this especially gratifying because we have tried to "catch the bloom twice before and missed in our timing! We were a few days shy of peak...but actually saw flowers this time!
  From Fitzwilliam we headed to Troy with the intention of closing out our day with a picture of Mt. Monadnock from the "back lawn at the Inn at East Hill Farm" as recommended by the Best NH Drives book.
When we arrived at the InnInn at East Hill Farm we were delighted to discover that this was a "Family" Farm Resort. There were all sizes and shapes and varieties of animals. goatApparently family's stay in one of the "cabin like"units, that appear to be very spacious and have wonderful screened in porches. There appears to also be an on site restaurant.
 Anyone with a family with young children should really check this place out. It looks like a wonderful vacation spot for the whole family!
  Mt MonadnockThey were also right about the view of Mt. Monadnock!
  We were quite a distance from home in Concord NH so we decided to head back in that direction! But of course our journey would not be complete without stopping at Alberto's for dinner.This time it was after 5:00...and they were open for business! It was not a disappointment!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  Come travel the back-roads of New Hampshire . There are wonderful examples of our history around every corner!

Jaffrey Center reminds me of Old Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts, where I used to visit as a child...
