Sunday Morning on CBS is one of my favorite programs. They always have a series
of interesting stories from around the US, people to see and places to go!
I hope to pass on a little of the same........
NEW HAMPSHIRE SUNDAY MORNING
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Exploring this wonderful State of New Hampshire is something my husband and I never tire of! There are so many diverse attractions and ever-changing landscapes...the possibilities are endless!
Not too long ago I picked up a great book called BEST NEW HAMPSHIRE DRIVES-14 Tours in the Granite State, by Kay and Bill Scheller.
We decided on an "abbreviated" version of Tour#9 The Eastern Border Lakes. This tour took us out of Conway and around Lake Ossipee!
One of our first stops was the Governor Wentworth Historic Site
. This was the site of the Wentworth house one of New Hampshire's most refined eighteenth century plantations. It's owner/designer was John Wentworth II (1737-1820). He was the second and last governor of the Province of New Hampshire.
This was a Grand retreat built on 6,000 acres overlooking Lake Wentworth. John Wentworth had a 45 mile road built to connect his mansion to Portsmouth! This wonderful retreat burned to the ground in 1820, coincidentally the year of Wentworth's death!
All that remains is a historical marker...and an old well!
We continued on towards Effingham. Effingham is the home of the first "Normal " School
.The second floor of this school was eventually the First State Teachers College!
A rather un-pretentious beginning for a well respected profession!
Next door to the school was the magnificent Squire Lord's Mansion. Such a beautiful building with a second floor Paladian Window and an Octagonal Domed Cupola. It was built by Isacc Lord in 1820
.
The remainder of our outing was spent enjoying the wonderful, exciting and historic buildings of Wakefield.Twenty six of the 18th and 19th century buildings in this
Historic Area are on the National Register of Historic Places
Epsicopal Church
Little Red School House
Cobbler Shoppe
Well, we only made a dent in the plan of the tour! An overnight stay would have been welcomed but hadn't been planned for. So, we headed home to Concord, New Hampshire our minds eye filled with grand historical images.
Come travel the back-roads of New Hampshire. There are wonderful examples of our history around every corner!
Someday you'll have to come and do a "road trip"
(These have to be fake words...quandong? Scrabble anyone?)
Hi Joan,
Beautiful trip you took us on this post! Love the pictures, and would love to know more about that book you mentioned. I just tried to find that online, but can't seem to find it. Where did you get that book? I have a few "Off the Beaten Path" books and love those. This one sounds like I'd love it as well.
Thanks Joan - I'll track this down!
I, too, thought this is some fantastic stuff to have on localism. I have featured you in this week's Localism Week in Review! Keep up the great posts!
